Criminal Investigations: “These things don’t happen to people like us…”
Professionals being investigated for criminal offences is not as rare as you would like to think. I have noted that professionals are oblivious to criminal investigation processes and are confused when dealing with such matters, perhaps because they have a personal view that “these things don’t happen to people like me”.
I understand that criminal law issues are the last thing on the minds of most people, however, relationship breakdowns, alcohol misuse and drugs/pornography addiction are not strangers to professionals. In fact, they are central issues which have commonly featured in police investigations.
No one is above the law.
Professional reputations are extremely valuable, your career may depend on it. If you as a professional have been contacted to attend a voluntary interview at the Police Station or even if you are arrested, seeking legal advice at the earliest opportunity should not be an option, but a priority.
I encourage you to have discussions with colleagues, family and friends about who you could speak to in confidence should an incident involving the Police occur.
Every professional person should have a telephone number of a criminal defence solicitor in their phone in the same way you have emergency numbers for a plumber or electrician.
